城市禁止露天 burn out the grill on a hot summer day, but not uncommon. From May 1st this year, parts of Fuzhou's Hecang district also prohibit outdoor barbecues. With the implementation of this measure, all six districts in Fuzhou have designated areas where outdoor barbecue food is prohibited, with a ban that applies throughout the day.

China has clear legal provisions for operating outdoor barbecue businesses. According to Article 81 of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Law: "No unit or individual shall engage in open-air barbecues or provide venues for such activities in areas prohibited by local people's governments." And Article 118: "If anyone violates these regulations and engages in open-air barbecues or provides venues for them during periods and regions prohibited by local people's governments, they shall be ordered to correct their behavior by county-level or higher urban administrative departments; confiscate their barbecue equipment and illegal gains; impose fines ranging from five hundred yuan to twenty thousand yuan."

Some netizens argue that air pollution caused by grilling is far less than industrial pollution or vehicle emissions. Why then should there be a strong crackdown on outdoor barbecues? "This problem needs specific issues addressed specifically," explained Dr. Peng Yue, an associate researcher at Tsinghua University's Environmental College to China News Service.

"Barbecue releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are important precursors to PM2.5 and ozone pollutants," Dr. Peng said. Outdoor grilling pollution comes from burning coal or wood fuel, releasing particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Meat cooked over direct flames reacts with heat producing VOCs.

Dr. Ma Jun from the Public Environmental Research Center emphasized that pollutants released through BBQ are low-altitude emissions that particularly affect densely populated cities with high residential densities due to limited air circulation at night leading to increased smog impact.

Netizens suggest following the model set by Zibo City where BBQ vendors were relocated indoors using environmentally friendly ovens while maintaining cultural appeal as seen on social media platforms like WeChat Moments before being shared across other platforms online!
